Mediterranean Favorites Lead the List
A new report from relocation and residency advisory firm Global Citizen Solutions ranks the top destinations for Americans considering a move abroad in 2026, with Mediterranean favorites Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece leading the list, alongside Mexico and Canada as strong practical alternatives closer to home.
Mexico's Accessibility Advantage
Mexico stands out as one of the more accessible options, requiring roughly $4,400 in monthly income or $74,000 in savings for temporary residency, with many Mexican consulates still offering same-day visa processing. Everyday costs for services like childcare, private healthcare, and home maintenance can run up to 70 percent lower than in the United States, and permanent residency becomes available after four years with no ongoing income requirements to maintain it.
Spain's Healthcare and Infrastructure Draw
Spain ranks highly for a different set of reasons: strong public and private healthcare, robust social services, and good infrastructure, with residency available primarily through a Digital Nomad Visa requiring about $3,000 in monthly income, or a Non-Lucrative Visa aimed at retirees and those with passive income.
What the Researchers Are Seeing
According to Laura Madrid Sartoretto, lead researcher at the Global Intelligence Unit for Global Citizen Solutions, Americans currently weighing a move abroad are focused overwhelmingly on Europe and Latin America, drawn to a slower pace of life, strong healthcare systems, and currencies and pensions that stretch further than they do at home. She pointed to Uruguay and Panama as standout options in Latin America for not taxing foreign-sourced income, alongside Mexico's continued appeal on cost of living and proximity to the US.
A Ranking, Not a Guarantee
The report is a reminder that rankings like this are directional rather than definitive: visa rules, tax treatment, and income requirements change frequently, and eligibility varies significantly by individual circumstances. Anyone seriously evaluating a move should verify current requirements with official government sources or a qualified relocation advisor before making a decision.
